Clare
Corban-Banks began her viola studies in Hamilton before taking up a
scholarship with the NZSO orchestral trainees (Schola Musica ) in
1983 under the tuition of Vyvyan Yendoll, principal viola NZSO.
During this time she was a member of the National Youth Orchestra;
two years as principal viola and co-leader of Schola Musica in her
final year. Clare then worked in the NZSO for three years and
married Edrick Corban-Banks, New Zealand's leading classical
guitarist in 1986.
Edrick graduated from Victoria University
with a B.Mus in performance and later studied guitar in Spain with
Aureo Herrero and in England with John Duarte. Edrick is the first
guitarist in NZ to major in guitar and to hold a FTCL in guitar
performance. He has been a national recording artist for Radio New
Zealand and has toured for the Music Federation of NZ with his flute
partner Dr. Roger Buckton, who currently is HOD of music at
Canterbury University. He formed his own ensemble, The Paganini
Ensemble, which included members of the NZSO; Dean major, Vyvyan
Yendoll and Farqhuar Wilkinson; the latter two being the section
principals
During 1984-85 Edrick was Performer in Residence
at Armidale University, Australia. It was during this period that he
encountered God in a deeply personal way. The pair moved to Auckland
where Edrick attended St. Johns College to train as an Anglican
priest and have since worked in parishes in Wellington and Katikati.
They spent 4 ¾ years in Spain as missionaries and returned to
New Zealand in 2003 with their six children.
Edrick, Clare
and their family live in Stoke, Nelson, working at St. Barnabas.
Music remains a major part of all their lives.

Edrick and Clare played this traditional Irish piece at Clare's brother-in-law's funeral. They then recorded it to be played at his memorial service a year later.
